Exploring the Connection Between Food & Emotions
As the world becomes increasingly fast-paced and technology-driven, mental and emotional health are becoming increasingly important topics. While social media and other changes may contribute to these problems, food also plays a big part. According to the Oriental medical model, our body is the vehicle carrying our emotional, mental, and spiritual being. The health of our body affects how we feel emotionally.

While social media and other changes may contribute to these problems, food also plays a big part. Oliver Cowmeadow, principal of the International Macrobiotic School, understands the importance of emotional health and the role it plays in our overall well-being. His journey began in 1980 when he was 24 years old, and he spent ten years studying macrobiotics and Oriental Medicine, becoming immersed in the principles of yin and yang and the five elements.
Unfortunately after his marriage ended, he struggled with depression, leading him to explore emotional counselling, psychotherapy, rebirthing, men’s groups, healing groups, and more. He gradually worked on himself emotionally and studied emotional counselling skills.
Today, at the International Macrobiotic School, Oliver incorporates the emotional side of health and healing into his courses, acknowledging the interconnectedness of our physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental states.
The Oriental medical model sees the human body as a whole made up of different parts: a physical body, an energy body (meridians, chakras, etc.), emotions, thoughts, and a spiritual side. All of these parts are interconnected, and the goal is to balance them all. In the West, we tend to separate these parts out, but in the Oriental macrobiotic approach, all of these parts are studied to see how they’re interconnected.
The connection between food and emotional health is crucial to understanding overall health and well-being. When people have difficulty making practical changes in their diet and lifestyle due to emotional baggage, emotional work and healing can help them make positive changes to improve their physical health. This relationship between our body and emotions is essential for understanding overall health and well-being.
It’s important to understand that the health of our bodies has a big impact on our emotions. If our body is out of balance, we are more likely to feel overwhelmed and unable to deal with even the smallest challenges in our lives. That’s why it’s essential to maintain a healthy balance in our lives and take care of our bodies by eating nutritious food, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. In modern culture, we tend to rely on stimulants such as coffee, black tea, sugar, and soft drinks to keep us going, often at the expense of our health.
When our bodies are in good health, we are much more emotionally stable and balanced. We can deal with the ups and downs of life more effectively and enjoy a more fulfilling life overall. It’s not about being paranoid but about being conscious of our health and taking small steps every day to keep ourselves in the best shape possible.
Maintaining a healthy balance in our lives is essential for our overall well-being. We must take care of our bodies by eating nutritious food, getting enough rest, and engaging in regular physical activity. By doing so, we can enjoy a more fulfilling life with a greater sense of adventure and exploration.
