Gut in a pickle without fermented foods

Digestive problems such as abdominal pain, indigestion, constipation and heartburn are common, with around 40 per cent of people suffering from at least one symptom. Yet all it takes to help keep the gut healthy, says macrobiotic author, teacher and practitioner Oliver Cowmeadow is a daily dose of salt pickled vegetables.

“These help digestion by providing beneficial flora to aid digestion and keep unwanted micro-organisms such as Candida in check,” he explained. “Every culture around the world has used fermented foods but they have fallen out of use in our modern times. They are an essential part of a healthy diet.”
